Leigh D Oliver, un giovane producer, musicista, e dj inglese sarà presto ospite di OFC – Old Family Crew Sabato 28 Marzo, e noi ne approfittiamo per potergli fare qualche domanda in esclusiva, prima del grande evento.

 

Dalla tua Biografia leggiamo che hai un background musicale decisamente variopinto: Rave, Hip Hop, Heavy metal, Indie Rock: come è scoccato l’amore per la musica house? Come fai convivere queste diverse inclianzioni musicali? Influenzano la tua musica di oggi o sono un mondo a parte?

Ritornando alle origini, era una serata al club in Leeds che io ed un gruppo di amici abbiamo visitato anni fa- quello è stato il posto che mi ha introdotto alla vera House Music, con un vero sound system e con un vero pubblico che era lì solamente per la musica.

 

Hai alle tue spalle un percorso non molto lungo ma sicuramente di successo: in poco tempo hai ottenuto grandi risultati. Alcune tue tracce hanno avuto e stanno avendo un gran successo: quale di queste, ad oggi, ti dà più soddisfazione ?

Tutte le influenze sono lì da qualche parte, suppongo che la maggior parte sia dormiente nel mio subconscio ahah – sono un chitarrista originariamente e suppongo che tutto quello che ho imparato attraverso la musica in qualche modo abbia modellato in ciò che creo oggi.

 

Con l’aumento della notorietà, hai avuto sicuramente modo di collaborare con realtà di diverse nazioni e di livello differente: cosa differenzia l’Italia dall’Ingilterra, dalla Spagna…

Si sto iniziando a girare un po’ ed è fantastico – ovviamente i diversi paesi hanno una loro diversa cultura ma in riferimento al Clubbing ed ai party quello che la gente vuole vivere uscendo la sera è essenzialmente la stessa cosa. Vogliono la libertà, un boogie, buona musica, bei ricordi e di essere in grado di lasciarsi andare. Detto questo, certamente alcuni paese fanno party più potenti di altri. Ahahha.

 

Entriamo per un attimo nella sfera personale: fuori dalle produzioni House, dai Dj Set, chi è Leigh D Oliver?

Marito, padre, amante dei piccioni ed aspirante chirurgo plastico.

 

Musicista, producer, dj: c’è una parte dominante? C’è una parte di te che spinge più in una direzione?

Mi sforzo sempre di essere un produttore migliore, sono abbastanza soddisfatto di dove sono arrivato come DJ e musicista, ma c’è sempre molto da imparare sulla produzione, così tante tecniche e trucchi ma così poco tempo di scoprirli.

 

Se non ci fosse la musica, Leigh D Oliver, cosa farebbe? Chi sarebbe?

Sarei probabilmente in fondo al giardino a coltivare verdura, o quello o starei installando tette finte.

 

Parliamo di tecnica: tra i Dj ci sono due grandi fazioni: una guarda al Vinile come unico strumento per il vero Dj, un’altra è più aperta verso tutte quelle che sono le tecnologie. So che hai avuto un primo incontro, forse decisivo, con dei vinili ricavati dai juke box dei bar!

Non ho mai condiviso l’idea che non sei un DJ se non usi i vinili – è ridicolo. Continuo a comprare vinili e mi piace mixare con i vinili a casa, ed usare la USB quando suono fuori a meno che non mi sia assicurato che i giradischi siano nelle migliori condizioni. Non c’è nulla di peggio che portare i tuoi vinili in una città e non essere in grado di suonarli perché l’impianto è a pezzi o coperto di vomito (o altri liquidi). Non puoi battere la sensazione che si prova con un vinile in mano o il controllo che hai quando sei ai piatti, è naturale, mentre il CD deck non lo è. Amo inoltre il sound più caldo che il taglio di un brano vinile dà alla musica.

 

Prima tappa a Milano, città simbolo della Movida Italiana, capitale economica e del divertimento: cosa ti aspetti dal pubblico italiano?

Ho sentito parlare molto bene del pubblico italiano, di certo mi aspetto molto mani in aria, molto casino e molta presenza.

 

Una traccia che non può mancare nella tua “dj bag” o nella tua playlist: tuo o di qualche tuo collega?

Leight d oliver, a young producer, musician and british Dj, will soon be guest of the OFC. Old Family Crew and we get the chance to ask him few question exclusively, just before the big event.

From your biography we read that you have a very colorful musical background that goes from Raves to Hip Hop, from Heavy metal to Indie Rock… how did the love for house music popped out?

Back to basics is a club night in Leeds which me and a bunch of mates visited years ago – that was the place that introduced me to proper House Music, a proper sound system and a proper crowd who were there solely for the music.

How do you combine all these different musical inputs? Do they influence your music of today, or are they just sit in some parallel universe? Yours is not a very long path but definetely it was full of successes… some of your tracks have got and still are having great success, which one of these, up to today, is giving you the most satisfaction? (not as sales but as personal success)

All the influences are in there somewhere, I suppose most are just dormant in my subconscious haha – I’m a guitar player originally and I suppose everything I’ve learnt through that music in some way shapes what I create today.
With the increasing fame, surely you’ve had the opportunity to work with different realities in different countries at different levels… what you think is different between England – Italy or Spain?

Yeah I’m starting to get about a bit now which is great – obviously different countries have their own different cultures but with regards to clubbing and parties it’s essentially the same thing that people want to experience on a night out – they want a release, a boogie, good music, good memories and to be able to let themselves go. Saying that though, certain countries certainly party harder than others haha.
Getting to your personal life…. out of the music… WHO IS LEIGHT D OLIVER?

Husband, Dad, pigeon fancier and wannabe plastic surgeon.
Musician, producer, dj: which is the dominant part? is there something in you that push harder than the others?

I’m always striving to be a better producer, I’m quite happy with where I’m at as I DJ and musician but there’s always more stuff to learn about production, so many techniques and tricks but oh so little time to discover them.
If there was no music, who would be Leigh D Oliver?

I’d probably be at the bottom of a garden growing vegetables, either that or installing fake tits.
Let’s talk about techniques: in the dj world there are 2 major factions: the one who look at the vinyl as the only tool for the real DJ, and the other who is open to all those new technologies. I know you’ve had a first meeting, perhaps decisive, with the vinyls out from a bar juke box. What do you think?

I’d never agree someone’s not a real DJ if they don’t use vinyl – that’s ridiculous. I still buy vinyl and I like to mix with vinyl at home, and USB when I’m playing out, unless I get a guarantee that the turntables are in top condition. There’s nothing worse than carrying your records halfway across a city and then not being able to play them because the decks are in pieces and covered in sick (or any other fluid). You can’t beat the way vinyl feels under hand and the control you have on the turntable, it just feels natural to me whereas CD deck does not. I also love the warmer sound that cutting a track to vinyl gives the music.
This is your first time in Milan, which is the city symbol of the Movida and is the colorful business capital of the country… what do you expect from the crowd?

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Italian crowds so I’m expecting lot’s of fist pumping, shouting and no shuffling whatsoever 🙂
